Naperville, IL – Worker Killed After Being Struck by Train at 105 E. 4th Ave

Naperville, IL (December 3, 2025) – On Monday night, December 1, a tragic workplace accident claimed the life of a contractor after a BNSF freight train struck snow-removal equipment near the Naperville Metra station.

According to officials from the City of Naperville, police and fire crews were dispatched to the train station located at 105 East 4th Avenue after reports of a severe rail incident. Investigators say an eastbound BNSF freight train collided with snow removal machinery operating on the station’s south platform. The equipment was used by a contractor hired to clear snow during Monday’s winter storm.

The worker was critically injured in the impact and later pronounced dead. His name has not yet been released pending family notifications.

The collision caused significant disruptions to inbound and outbound Metra BNSF service throughout the evening as emergency personnel and Metra Police secured the area and launched an investigation. Officials also confirmed full cooperation with the ongoing investigation led by Metra Police.

We send our heartfelt condolences to the deceased’s family members during this challenging time.

Fatal Train and Construction-Related Accidents in the Chicago Area

Severe workplace and transportation accidents remain a major safety concern across the Chicago region. Rail corridors, construction zones, and high-traffic commuter hubs create environments where a single moment of miscommunication, equipment failure, or visibility issue can result in devastating injuries or loss of life.

Common causes of serious rail- and construction-related accidents include:

  • Equipment operation in active rail zones: Workers clearing snow, repairing platforms, or maintaining track areas face constant risk when trains continue operating nearby.
  • Poor visibility due to weather: Snow, fog, and darkness can reduce sightlines for both workers and train crews, increasing collision risk.
  • Communication or dispatch failures: Miscommunication between contractors, railway operators, and train dispatch can lead to tragic overlaps in work zones and train routes.
  • Inadequate warning systems: Malfunctioning lights, alarms, or track-protection devices can fail to alert workers of approaching trains.
  • Contractor safety oversight issues: In busy metropolitan transit systems, gaps in contractor safety training or supervision can increase hazards on platforms or rail lines.
  • Mechanical or operational issues: Brake failures, improper signaling, or human error can all contribute to catastrophic incidents.

Families affected by fatal rail or construction accidents often face overwhelming grief, significant financial stress, funeral expenses, lost household income, and long-term emotional trauma. When a death occurs due to safety failures, employer negligence, equipment malfunction, or preventable risks, surviving family members may have the right to pursue a wrongful death claim.

A knowledgeable attorney can help determine whether safety protocols were followed, whether the work zone was properly secured, and whether the railway or contracting company failed to take reasonable steps to protect workers.

If you or someone close to you has lost a loved one in a train accident, construction incident, or workplace collision in the Chicago area, you do not have to navigate the aftermath alone. A wrongful death accident lawyer in Chicago can guide your family through the legal process, investigate what went wrong, and fight for the compensation you deserve.
